Youth Shaping Climate Policy
In a world that is changing faster than ever, the role of young people in the fight against climate change has never been more crucial. Sometimes, we feel powerless, as if small daily actions aren’t enough to make a difference. But is that really true?
Elena Accossato, a city councilor in Valfenera and Regional Secretary of the Young Democrats of Piedmont, shows us that real change doesn’t come only from small daily actions but from active engagement in politics and collective decision-making.
How many times have we been told that “institutions make the decisions” and that “we can do very little”? Elena urges us to flip this mindset: institutions make decisions that affect our future, and it’s our right and duty to be actively involved in the process. Attending city council meetings, talking to political representatives, and holding them accountable is the first step in ensuring others don’t decide for us.
Of course, reducing consumption, avoiding fast fashion, and wasting less water are all important actions. But the real turning point comes when we start thinking bigger: how is waste managed in our city? What environmental policies are being implemented locally? Who is making these decisions? Being informed is not enough—we need to make our voices heard.
“You don’t need to ask anyone’s permission to make your voice heard.” This is one of the most powerful statements in Elena’s interview. Too often, young people believe they have to wait for “their time” to have a say. But that time is now. Through social media, active participation, and intergenerational collaboration, we can create real impact.
If you want to understand how to turn your concern for the climate into real action, don’t miss the full interview. Elena Accossato will inspire you and give you practical tips on how to make a difference.
