Youth Shaping Climate Policy
The climate crisis is no longer just an environmental issue—it is a social challenge that impacts every aspect of our lives. To tackle this urgent crisis, it is crucial to drive change through climate activism.
Gabija Gorobecaitė-Jocienė, an activist from Extinction Rebellion Lithuania, has been advocating for climate justice for five years. In her recent talk at the Youth for Climate: Rise, Unite, Transform event, organized by YSCP (Youth Shaping Climate Policy), she emphasized the vital role activists play in the fight against climate change.
Climate activists like Gabija take collective action based on scientific evidence. Their work goes beyond raising awareness; they accelerate cultural, economic, and political change, promoting long-term sustainable choices.
Empowering communities through citizen assemblies – A direct democracy model that actively involves people in environmental decision-making.
Eliminating fossil fuel subsidies – A crucial step in reducing CO2 emissions and advancing the transition to renewable energy.
Taxing the super-rich to fund sustainability – A 0.5% tax on the wealthiest 1% could create 117 million jobs in the renewable energy sector.
According to Gabija, those who wish to join the movement must overcome some fundamental barriers:
Understanding the causes of climate change – The first step is recognizing the impact of human activities on global warming.
Acknowledging the urgency of the crisis – Climate change effects, such as extreme weather events and food shortages, are already a reality.
Overcoming psychological and social obstacles – From eco-anxiety to climate denial and societal criticism, every activist must be prepared to stand firm in their cause.
Finding your role in the movement – Protests, digital content creation, policy advocacy—everyone can contribute based on their skills and passions.
Despite the challenges, activism offers numerous benefits:
A sense of community and support – Building strong connections with like-minded individuals.
Opportunities for growth and learning – Participating in international events and developing new skills.
Career access in the sustainability sector – Activism can open doors to environmental careers.
Hope and real impact – Knowing that you’re making a difference for the planet is a powerful motivation.
Climate activism is a crucial tool in addressing the environmental crisis and building a more just and sustainable future. As Gabija reminds us: “If not us, then who?” The planet’s future depends on the actions we take today. Every effort counts.
