Youth Shaping Climate Policy
There is a quote that has always stayed with me: “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.” – Rumi.
I first came across this quote when I was young, and it has shaped the way I see the world. We live in a polarized society where we are quick to judge people based on their opinions without truly listening. I strongly believe in the importance of mutual understanding, even when we disagree.
Looking back, one of the best decisions I ever made was pursuing a path that initially seemed like a mistake. Studying medicine didn’t work out as planned, but in hindsight, it was a blessing. Often, what we perceive as failure is actually a redirection toward something better.
This principle also applies to activism, particularly in climate discussions. Too often, people are labeled as “engaged” or “indifferent,” when in reality, true change happens through dialogue and understanding different perspectives.
On a personal level, I run an Instagram account that started when I received a job offer from the European Commission. Today, it has grown into a community of nearly 30,000 people, where I share career advice and make complex topics like energy and climate more accessible. One of the most common questions I get is: “I don’t have a background in public policy. Can I still apply?” My answer is always yes—diverse voices are essential in the EU and in policymaking.
Finally, I want to talk about the Butterfly Effect—the idea that small actions can lead to significant changes. We don’t need to “save the world” overnight; change starts with our surroundings. Some of the best messages I’ve received say things like, “I never had a positive view of the EU, but you changed my perspective,” or “Thanks to you, I found a job in sustainability.” These moments remind me that even a single conversation or post can shift someone’s path.
Never underestimate your impact—global change starts with daily actions. Often, the smallest gestures make the biggest difference.
