Doing the Political: Student-Civic Mobilization and the Making of Solidarity and Resistance in Serbia?

These are some of the key questions at the heart of “Doing the Political: Student-Civic Mobilization and the Making of Solidarity and Resistance in Serbia,” the next webinar organised as part of the You(th) CARE 4 Change project.

Taking place online on 15 July 2026 at 17:00 CET, the webinar will explore student-led civic mobilisation in Serbia, examining how young people, activists and civil society organisations are creating new pathways for democratic participation, solidarity and collective resistance in an evolving political landscape.

Bringing together academic research and civil society experience, the session will provide participants with valuable insights into contemporary social movements, grassroots participation and the role of solidarity in building more democratic, inclusive societies that actively challenge different forms of discrimination.

Understanding civic mobilisation through an intersectional lens

Across Europe, young people have increasingly become key actors in defending democratic values and fundamental rights. Through student movements, grassroots initiatives and civil society networks, they are reshaping political participation, challenging inequalities and promoting new forms of active citizenship.

Serbia offers a particularly relevant case for understanding how collective movements, alliances and solidarity networks emerge and evolve in contexts marked by significant political and social tensions.

The webinar will examine civic mobilisation through an intersectional perspective, exploring how gender, power, digital technologies and structural inequalities intersect within democratic participation. Special attention will be given to the role of young women, feminist advocacy practices and the ways digital spaces can simultaneously function as tools for participation, surveillance and resistance.

About the speaker

Katarina Bogićević is a researcher and Master’s student in Peace, Security and Development at the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade.

Her research focuses on critical approaches to digital security, examining how digitally mediated practices reshape and reinforce power relations through phenomena such as AI-facilitated gender-based violence, far-right digital ecosystems and different forms of digital authoritarianism.

She is currently a Research Intern at the Digital Society Lab of the Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory.

Alongside her academic work, Katarina is actively engaged in Serbian civil society. She serves as President of JEF Serbia (Young European Federalists – JEF Europe) within the European Movement in Serbia and is involved in feminist advocacy initiatives.

The discussion will be moderated by Ivana Jovanovic from the Media Diversity Institute Western Balkans, who will guide the conversation on youth participation, democratic engagement, solidarity and civic mobilisation.

This webinar is organised within the framework of You(th) CARE 4 Change, a project co-funded by the European Union.

The project promotes youth participation, active citizenship and social justice through training opportunities, international dialogue and cooperation among civil society organisations. Through webinars, educational activities and spaces for exchange, young people from different countries can share experiences, develop new skills and build networks of solidarity to address today’s social and political challenges.
