AN OVERVIEW

Starting from the evident disillusionment of young Italians in terms of politics, well demonstrated by the low turnout, the project developed educational paths for young people aged between 17 and 21 with the overall objective of promoting a more informed and aware approach to political engagement and, consequently, greater involvement given the 2024 European elections, so that young people take a more active role as Italian and European citizens. The project was focused on 6 regions (Piedmont, Veneto, Campania, Sicily, Apulia and Calabria). It was based on the methods of Non-Formal Education, placing young people and their opinions at the centre and promoting constructive dialogue on a range of topics that impact civic and political activation. The project addressed issues such as the lack of knowledge of electoral systems and procedures, scepticism towards political parties, and the difficulty in discerning reliable sources of information.

OBJECTIVES

  • Building safe and inclusive spaces for meeting and expression, according to democratic and participatory principles;
  • Ensure fair access to quality, impartial and appropriate information for young people on how the EU works and how to participate in it, particularly in terms of elections;
  • Educating young people in their role as actors capable of influencing politics and democratic life;
  • Ensuring that young people have better access to reliable information, supporting their ability to critically evaluate information and engage in a participative and constructive dialogue.

OUTPUTs

  • 3 ROUND OF LOCAL EVENTS: Each Local Event targeted 15 people for a total of 90 young people who were directly involved.
  • SURVEY: Conducted online at a national level through a data collection form and refined by local focus groups. The survey focused on data on participation in the last Italian general elections and forecasts of participation in the European elections.
  • NATIONAL MOBILITY: A residential exchange at the ‘Il Paguro’ hostel located at a confiscated property for 20 young people that participated in the local events.
  • INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY: Visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg in order to get to know the places of European Democracy more closely and to be able to critically examine fundamental aspects of participation from a youth perspective, to be able to elaborate and develop one’s own manifesto.

RESEARCH REPORT

Among the key activities that made it possible to explore the opinions, experiences and visions of young people in more detail is the research, led by the Interregional Coordination Group composed of young people and focused on the production, dissemination and analysis of a quantitative/qualitative questionnaire. This report presents the main findings of the research process that provide an interesting insight into political participation in the target regions.
