Is it possible to develop digital services without relying on the major commercial platforms and the business models of Big Tech? These are some of the questions that will be explored during “All You Need to Code Feminist Online Spaces (Zero AI, Zero Bezos)“, the new webinar organised within the You(th) CARE 4 Change project, taking place on 29 July at 5:00 PM CET. The session will provide an introduction to building digital spaces using open-source tools and modern web technologies, demonstrating how websites and online services can be created, customised and hosted on affordable, GDPR-compliant servers powered by 100% renewable energy. Participation is free upon registration:https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/E9JyEoNbSWOsC7oho_rUvQ Building the Web of Tomorrow Learning how to code has never been more accessible. At the same time, the growing number of programming languages, frameworks and development tools can make it difficult for beginners to know where to start. During this webinar, Dr Sergi Bray will guide participants through some of the core technologies used in modern web development, sharing the learning path he has built over the past decade while navigating an ever-evolving technological landscape. Rather than attempting to teach every aspect of programming in a single session, the webinar aims to provide participants with practical guidance on where to begin and which technologies can be used to build modern digital services. What the Webinar Will Cover Throughout the session, participants will be introduced to several key topics in modern web development, including: coding essentials, including IDEs and code repositories; the foundations of the web: HTML, CSS and JavaScript; development tools and frameworks such as Vite, NodeJS, ReactJS and TanStack; server infrastructure, localhost, Docker and Kubernetes; open-source platforms including Forgejo, Harbor and ArgoCD; complete client–API–database web architectures; practical examples of what can be built, including secure chat platforms, online communities and other digital services. As the subject is far too broad to be covered in depth during a single webinar, participants interested in learning more will also be able to access additional tutorials that Dr Sergi Bray will publish on his website. About the Speaker The webinar will be led by Dr Sergi Bray, founder of DefyAbuse.org, a non-hierarchical global network of domain experts and technical specialists working to combat the online facilitation of sexual abuse. Since 2021, he has been researching and mapping online ecosystems related to deepfake and AI-generated sexual abuse. His research has shown that, since 2023, almost two new AI sexual abuse websites have appeared online every day. To respond to this growing challenge, Dr Bray has been developing investigative tools and automated methodologies that enable DefyAbuse members to identify, investigate and contribute to the removal of websites that facilitate online sexual abuse. Part of the You(th) CARE 4 Change Project This webinar is part of the activities of You(th) CARE 4 Change, a project co-funded by the EU DEAR Programme, which brings together young people and organisations from twelve countries to promote learning opportunities, active participation and global citizenship. The event offers participants the opportunity to explore the relationship between technology, participation and digital innovation, while discovering how open-source technologies and modern web development can support the creation of new online spaces. How does a student movement emerge? How can solidarity become a form of resistance? What role can young people play in defending democracy and social justice? These are some of the key questions at the heart of “Doing the Political: Student-Civic Mobilization and the Making of Solidarity and Resistance in Serbia,” the next webinar organised as part of the You(th) CARE 4 Change project. Taking place online on 15 July 2026 at 17:00 CET, the webinar will explore student-led civic mobilisation in Serbia, examining how young people, activists and civil society organisations are creating new pathways for democratic participation, solidarity and collective resistance in an evolving political landscape. Bringing together academic research and civil society experience, the session will provide participants with valuable insights into contemporary social movements, grassroots participation and the role of solidarity in building more democratic, inclusive societies that actively challenge different forms of discrimination. Understanding civic mobilisation through an intersectional lens Across Europe, young people have increasingly become key actors in defending democratic values and fundamental rights. Through student movements, grassroots initiatives and civil society networks, they are reshaping political participation, challenging inequalities and promoting new forms of active citizenship. Serbia offers a particularly relevant case for understanding how collective movements, alliances and solidarity networks emerge and evolve in contexts marked by significant political and social tensions. The webinar will examine civic mobilisation through an intersectional perspective, exploring how gender, power, digital technologies and structural inequalities intersect within democratic participation. Special attention will be given to the role of young women, feminist advocacy practices and the ways digital spaces can simultaneously function as tools for participation, surveillance and resistance. About the speaker Katarina Bogićević is a researcher and Master’s student in Peace, Security and Development at the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade. Her research focuses on critical approaches to digital security, examining how digitally mediated practices reshape and reinforce power relations through phenomena such as AI-facilitated gender-based violence, far-right digital ecosystems and different forms of digital authoritarianism. She is currently a Research Intern at the Digital Society Lab of the Institute of Philosophy and Social Theory. Alongside her academic work, Katarina is actively engaged in Serbian civil society. She serves as President of JEF Serbia (Young European Federalists – JEF Europe) within the European Movement in Serbia and is involved in feminist advocacy initiatives. Moderator The discussion will be moderated by Ivana Jovanovic from the Media Diversity Institute Western Balkans, who will guide the conversation on youth participation, democratic engagement, solidarity and civic mobilisation. On 1 July 2026 at 17:00 CET, the You(th) CARE 4 Change Project will host the online webinar “Doing Digital Feminism from an Intersectional Approach”, with Silvia Semenzin and Hafsa Rmich. The webinar will bring together two activists from Italy and Morocco in conversation to explore the realities of online activism as women. From navigating harassment and speaking on sensitive issues to building solidarity across contexts, the session will examine both the challenges and the opportunities shaping digital feminist movements today. Digital spaces have become key environments for feminist activism, public debate and collective action. Online platforms can help amplify voices, connect communities and create new forms of mobilisation. At the same time, they can also expose women and activists to harassment, misogyny, silencing practices and other forms of digital violence. This webinar will reflect on how women activists experience online spaces, how they respond to barriers to participation, and how feminist movements can build more inclusive and resilient digital communities. The discussion will address: the challenges faced by women activists in digital spaces online harassment and technology-facilitated gender-based violence the role of social media in feminist mobilisation barriers to collective action and public participation emerging forms of resistance, solidarity and care positive trends for more inclusive online spaces About the speakers Dr. Silvia Semenzin is a sociologist and international advocate specialising in online misogyny, technology-facilitated gender-based violence and platform governance. She works as an Adjunct Professor at the Open University of Catalonia and as a Senior Researcher at AI Forensics. Her work bridges academic research and feminist activism, combining digital methods, policy analysis and survivor-led strategies to expose the structural dynamics of abuse in online environments. In 2019, she promoted the Italian campaign #intimitàviolata, which contributed to the criminalisation of non-consensual intimate image sharing in Italy. Today, she advises European institutions, governments and civil society organisations on the governance challenges posed by emerging forms of digital violence and the growing radicalisation of antifeminism. Hafsa Rmich is a Moroccan social anthropologist, artist, cultural project manager and founder of Collectif Nar, a feminist arts and culture collective working on sexual and reproductive health, mental health and environmental justice. Her work combines research, artistic practice and community engagement to create dialogue and challenge social taboos through creative approaches. Through her cultural and feminist practice, she contributes to building spaces where sensitive social issues can be addressed collectively, critically and inclusively. Why an intersectional approach matters Digital feminism cannot be understood through a single experience. Women’s participation online is shaped by multiple and overlapping factors, including geography, culture, race, class, sexuality, political context and access to digital spaces. An intersectional approach helps us understand how different forms of inequality interact and how feminist movements can respond to diverse realities. It also allows activists and communities to move beyond one-size-fits-all narratives and build more inclusive strategies for collective action. By bringing together perspectives from Italy and Morocco, this webinar will create a space for dialogue on how digital feminist movements can challenge violence, build solidarity and imagine more inclusive online futures. On 12 May at 17:00 CET, the You(th) CARE 4 Change Project will host the online webinar “Algorithmic Injustice, Redress and Resistance” with Dr. Carolina Are, digital criminologist at the London School of Economics and Political Science. This webinar will explore how platform algorithms shape visibility online and how online activism, especially from marginalized communities, can be unfairly targeted by hidden forms of censorship.Digital platforms are not neutral spaces. Algorithms influence what we see, what we engage with and what remains visible. While they are often presented as technical systems, they have strong social and political implications.One of the most discussed phenomena is shadowbanning, a form of invisible restriction where content is made less visible without the user being clearly informed. This can significantly impact activists, content creators and communities working on social change, limiting their reach and participation. The webinar “Algorithmic Injustice, Redress and Resistance” will offer an accessible and engaging session combining academic research, real-world examples and lived experience.During the webinar, participants will explore how algorithms affect online visibility, why marginalized voices are often disproportionately impacted, what shadowbanning really means and how individuals and communities are pushing back against these dynamics.The session will be led by Dr. Carolina Are, whose work focuses on the intersection of online harms, freedom of speech and digital rights. She conducted the first detailed study on shadowbanning and her research has been published in leading journals such as New Media & Society and Social Media + Society. Her work has also been featured in major international media including The Guardian, The New York Times, the BBC and Wired.In addition to her academic work, Dr. Are is also an activist and content creator behind the @bloggeronpole project, actively engaging with platforms, governments, regulators and NGOs to improve digital governance and regulation. This webinar is part of the You(th) CARE 4 Change Project, a European initiative co-funded by the European Union. The project promotes active citizenship, social justice and youth engagement, encouraging young people to critically engage with social and digital challenges.Within this framework, addressing algorithmic injustice is essential.
